Review & Description

This is my personal blog, focused on “biblical life.”
You may be thinking, “You write on life?” Broad topic – I get it. In an attempt to narrow down “biblical life,” here is a list of some things to expect down the line:
-> Biblical Commentary – Explaining the Scriptures
-> Thoughts on Following Christ
-> Book or Resource Reviews / Recommendations
-> A Few Ideas on Personal Health and Finances
-> An Occasional Movie or Music Review

Understand this: Everything you and I do is related to spirituality and biblical life. Therefore I may have a post here and there that will not seem to fit into any category.

My goal and passion is to help you and others understand the Bible and maximize your God given potential for life. If you’re a long standing Christian, or contemplating Christianity, or eager to learn how to improve your life – then this is a place for you!

Kindle blogs are fully downloaded onto your Kindle so you can read them even when you're not wirelessly connected. And unlike RSS readers which often only provide headlines, blogs on Kindle give you full text content and images, and are updated wirelessly throughout the day. Read more

40 Days with Jesus: Cultivating Habits of the Heart (Everyday Theology Series) (Kindle Edition)
By Ryan J. Pelton

Review & Description

40 Days with Jesus is an introduction to the spiritual disciplines/habits necessary to grow in intimacy with God. Habits such as Bible reading, prayer, evangelism, repentance, worship, and service.

Many people bemoan that their spiritual lives seem dry and empty. It does not have to be this way. God has given us spiritual means - to find a way out of the desert into the waters of God's grace.

40 Days with Jesus, exists to answer such questions as: How does spiritual growth happen? What can hurt our spiritual growth? What practices has God given us to grow spiritually? How is intimacy with God possible? How can we love our neighbors? How can we make a difference in the world? Who is Jesus?

What could happen if we took 40 days to walk with Jesus by using the spiritual habits? What might we learn? What might change in us?

Spiritual maturity is slow and a life long process.Take 40 days and discover the God who made you, loves you, died for you, and wants you to grow to be more like Him. Read more

Review & Description

A little bit preaching, a tad irreverent and a dash of hilarious - Wishful Preaching is a collection of 12 sermons that SHOULD be preached from the pulpit. After 15 years of ministry and a less than pretty exit, I've become aware that there are a few things I wish I'd said from the pulpit.

Preaching isn't really all about what the preacher does. It is about what we do, what we hear and how that impacts our lives. Preaching is as much about hearing as it is about talking. This book is about the talking, the proclaiming of preaching. I have written in a form very similar to how I've preached with a mix of scripture, story and humor.

This book is about hearing, too. You will be challenged to hear some things in different ways, in ways that might really challenge you, even make you steaming, righteous mad. Sound fun?

In this short work, I have attempted to create a written environment in which both the preaching and the hearing can take place. I offer you these written words with the same authority and conviction as if speaking to you from the pulpit. What’s different, is I’m saying to you here things I never dared say in my years in front of a congregation - and wish I had. Read more

Trusting God with your Future (Soul Food)
Trusting God with your Future (Soul Food) (Kindle Edition)
By Joana James

Review & Description

This is a small collection of devotions meant to encourage, strengthen and stir the hearts of Christians. Trust is a complicated issue, especially when applied to someone we can't see. Not only is this book about trust, but it's about the everyday situations that affect out trust in God.

Each lesson in this book is one the author has experienced and learned herself. There are personal testimonies and experiences that are meant to inspire and to challenge.

As the author states in one of the devotions included in this book, "In the party of life, God is the one guest you always invite because he always brings and amazing gift!" May this gift from her heart bless yours. Read more

We are a used movie & video game store. All discs (come with DVD case & artwork) are in good condition. Discs will never have more than a few light scratches. If any problems, contact us within 7 days for replacement or refund! Purchase with confidence!Do yourself a favor: pick up a copy of Alien, Ridley Scott's brilliant sci-fi/horror masterpiece, instead of wasting your time on The Relic. This patent rip-off of just about every other worthy horror and/or disaster flick certainly looks good in the packaging: a sturdy cast led by Penelope Ann Miller, Tom Sizemore, and Oscar-winner Linda Hunt; a reliable director (Peter Hyams); and a creepy enough setting--Chicago's Museum of Natural History, where an anticipated exhibition about tribal artifacts called "Superstition" is about to debut. OK. So far, so good. But some of the pieces scheduled for show have crossed customs even though the freighter that has hauled them north is found adrift and empty--its crew the victims of a mysterious creature that is soon on the rampage in the museum.

The Relic relies on huge leaps of faith to engage the viewer, and finally offers nothing to elevate what could have been good fun--poking here and there at several different movie genres--to a higher level . Ultimately, the film suffers most from its own self-consciousness--it knows it's a carbon copy of better predecessors, and its awkwardness is apparent. The otherwise glossy production is so dimly lit that it's a struggle to tell what's going on, and everything in this tepid formula piece about genetic mutation gone awry is further marred by cheesy special effects. It's almost as if the movie is trying to run away from itself and hide. Try as they may, the cast is saddled with dull, wishy-washy characters who are predictably doomed or saved, depending on their place in the food chain. While the trick in any good sci-fi film is to make the monster as smart--or smarter--than its pursuers, The Relic relegates its mutated horror to less than brainy turf and the war between good and evil is never much of a war at all--just a noisy, bloody, borrowed mess. --Paula Nechak Read more

The Kalgoorlie Skimpy (A Feisty Ferreira Mystery)
The Kalgoorlie Skimpy (A Feisty Ferreira Mystery) (Kindle Edition)
By Martin Roth

Review & Description

How do you go about solving a murder when no one – including even the victim’s wife - is telling the truth? For Brazilian geologist and financial analyst Feisty Ferreira, it means a journey to the rugged Australian outback, where mystery surrounds a massive new gold discovery.

There she meets a strange cast of characters that include a gold mining entrepreneur with a dark secret, a church pastor on a mission to stop the gold from being mined, and a young woman graduate student who serves beer in a pub in her underwear – one of the town’s famous skimpies.

And in the background is a mysterious Chinese woman who seems to be trying to buy up the entire output of the new goldmine.

This novella (32,000 words) is the second in the Feisty Ferreira financial mystery series.

Praise for Martin Roth’s thriller “Prophets and Loss”:

“A thrilling ride that begins as a story of murder and revenge and ends as a reflection on loss and forgiveness....Fast-paced and edgy.” - SydneyAnglicans.net

“Wow!.…When “Prophets and Loss” arrived…I certainly wasn’t expecting a meaty murder mystery cum terrorist plot. And when I realized that’s what it was, I certainly wasn’t then expecting Roth’s Johnny Ravine mystery to deliver such a fabulous gospel message….This is a great book for a Christian or as a starter for a non-Christian. A fabulous surprise.” - The Presbyterian Pulse

Praise for Martin Roth’s thriller “Hot Rock Dreaming” (Australian Christian Book of the Year finalist):

“Roth is a Christian author and, although spiritual warfare is crucial to the plot, this book is still a murder mystery…Thought-provoking and an enjoyable read.” – On Fire

“Highly readable…You will be both entertained and educated.” – Journey Read more

By Dana Peterson

Review & Description

Day By Day With God's Biblical Promises: Applying God's Promises to My Life

*** This is Volume 3 of the series. ***

There are hundreds of promises contained in the pages of the Bible. This book is unlike any other devotional that you may have used because it focuses on promises and was written to make God's promises more applicable to daily living.

Each Daily Promise Devotion Contains:

1. A Bible verse from 2 Versions

The verse containing the promise is in the New English Translation and the King James Version

2. A Story, Anecdote, Quote, etc. that I have Heard or Seen
The context section of each day is designed to make the promise more memorable with a story, anecdote, quote, etc.

3. How to Pray the Verse Back to God
If you haven't had the opportunity to pray Scripture back to God, I show what it looks like to me, to get you started. When you just don't know what to pray to God, open your Bible and pray Scripture to him.

4. Bullet Statements to Help You Make It More Personal
The final section of each day is a way to get you thinking of how you could make the promises personal to you. I get you started, but you know you best, so trust God and yourself to help you determine how to make the promises personal.

It is important to take action on what you read. Many of God's promises are freely available, but there are also many that require some action on our part. Please be proactive. Read more

Knit Together: An Amish Knitting Novel - A Small Town Romance (Kindle Edition)

Knit Together: An Amish Knitting Novel - A Small Town Romance
Knit Together: An Amish Knitting Novel - A Small Town Romance (Kindle Edition)
By Karen Anna Vogel

Review & Description

“Two cultures knit together by one faith”
Ginny and James Rowland have close-knit ties with many Amish families in the small-town of Smickburg, PA. But these ties are threatened to unravel…
Ginny’s photographer brother, Joseph, comes up from Pittsburgh to capture Amish farm scenes, but instead captures the heart of an Amish woman, Katie Byler.
A shunned Amish man finds refuge in the Rowland’s Baptist Church.
The Bishop discovers his son is dating the Rowland’s daughter.
Will Granny Weaver’s knitting circle, that Ginny and other Englishers attend, be able to bring harmony through their love and faith?

Karen Anna Vogel is a trusted English friend to Amish families in Western PA and Western NY. These friends inspired her to write the Amish Knitting Circle series. She owns Thrifty Christian Shopper, an online Christian bookstore, and is a volunteer advocate for Compassion International.

What others have to say about Knit Together: An Amish Knitting Novel

“Within the simplicity of an Amish setting, Karen Anna Vogel has taken on topics that are universal; grief, family estrangement, cultural differences and of course love. And in all this, she crafts a story weaving these topics through two cultures-the Amish and the English. The beauty is in seeing the truth of how faith and trust in God can reconcile friends, families, and communities.”
Dr. Maryann Roberts, Ph.D. Clinical Christian Counselor
“Karen Anna Vogel brings to the table a fresh new Amish series that readers will certainly love based from her own experiences as a friend to the Amish. We 'English' look at the Amish through rose-colored glasses. They seem so peaceful and content with a simple way of life. But we forget they are people like everyone else. Karen's series shows this through the hardships and heartbreaks they face and the faith they cling to or struggle with.”
Rita Gerlach Surrender the Wind, Daughters of the Potomac Series

“Author Karen Vogel has approached the often misunderstood beliefs or the Amish with tact and tenderness, and I highly recommend this heart-stirring story.”
Kathi Macias award-winning author of 35 novels, including Deliver Me From Evil and A Christmas Journey Home
"Karen writes with heart-touching insight and her characters are gripping. Highly recommended."

Prophecy 101 (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description

Do you prophesy? If not, why not?

These may be questions you have never been asked before, or at least, not very often. But did you know that the Apostle Paul asked questions much like these of early Christians? He wanted all to prophesy.

Why?

Prophecy is a gift meant for each of us so we can help other people.
(1 Corinthians 12:7 paraphrased)

The Apostle Paul knew the early Christians needed prophecy because of their perilous times. Famines, persecutions, wars, and even shipwrecks awaited many of them so they needed warnings from God. And one of the best ways to do that was through prophecy.

Okay, but what about today's Christians?

On May 20, 1985, I was planning on committing suicide, but a businessman spoke prophetic words to me which saved my life. (www.larrywho.com)

As you can probably guess, I am fervent for prophecy and like the Apostle Paul, I believe all should prophesy. You see, just one prophetic word might change your life, a family member's life, a neighbor's life, or a stranger's life. And who knows? Lives might be saved because you prophesy.

Prophecy 101 contains 58 simple lessons that I have learned over the last twenty-seven years on how to prophesy. The book is filled with scriptural and personal examples in a quick reading style.

So, do you want to prophesy? The decision is yours. Read more

Authentic: Character Traits of a Genuine Christian (Kindle Edition)

Authentic: Character Traits of a Genuine Christian
Authentic: Character Traits of a Genuine Christian (Kindle Edition)
By Brian Tubbs

Review & Description

What Makes an Authentic Christian?

Will the real Christians please stand up?

Over two billion people claim, in one form or another, to be Christians today. And we are constantly inundated (via TV, radio, Internet, church, etc.) with what purport to be "Christian" principles and truths. In all this "noise," it's critical that we remember what Jesus says about authentic Christianity. After all, Christianity is - or at least it's supposed to be - all about Jesus.

And Jesus isn't out to win a popularity contest. Jesus isn't looking for fans. He's looking for followers. He's looking for disciples -- true Christian disciples who manifest authentic faith and character.

In his bestselling book Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus, Kyle Idleman, the Teaching Pastor at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, writes of an epiphany he had when preparing for an Easter message. "As I sat in the sanctuary surrounded by thousands of empty seats, here's what became clear to me: it wasn't the size of the crowd Jesus cared about; it was their level of commitment."

A committed follower of Jesus is an authentic follower of Jesus. Commitment and authenticity go hand in glove. You can't have one without the other.

John Piper, in his book What Jesus Demands From the World, echoes a similar theme. He says you can teach a parrot to recite Jesus' commandments, but you can't teach a parrot to "observe" and live out Jesus' commandments. Likewise, it's not enough that people simply repeat what Jesus taught or dress themselves up in pious language. We must live in a way that represents and glorifies Jesus Christ.

In Authentic: Character Traits of a Genuine Christian, Pastor Brian Tubbs explores the concept of authenticity in Christ. He examines it from two perspectives:
  1. How should people look at Christianity from the outside? Many observers of the Christian world wonder how so many people who claim the name of Christ can cause heartache and tragedy or live in a such a way that hardly reflects Jesus' noble teachings. After all, the Ku Kux Klan claims to be Christian. Adolf Hitler referred to himself as a Christian, and you've got self-identified Christian churches, like Westboro Baptist Church, spewing hatred toward homosexuals and picketing the funerals of dead American soldiers.
  2. How can genuine Christians know that they are growing authentically in Christ? How can we know that we're on the right track in our spiritual growth? It turns out that the Apostle Paul gives some pretty clear milestones by which we can track our progress. This ebook looks at Paul's standard for measuring our growth in Christ.
Written with busy people in mind, this ebook (approximately 10,000 words) is straight to the point and full of information that can help you deepen your faith and better understand what Christianity is all about.

Backwards (Kindle Edition)

Backwards
Backwards (Kindle Edition)
By J.S. Clark

Review & Description

Jesus was a Hebrew. He went to the Temple, often. He called it His Father's house. He went to synagogue on the Sabbath. He attended the feasts, even when people were waiting to kill him. He argued doctrine from Moses, the Prophets, and the Writings. He said the Shema (“the LORD our God, the LORD is one”). He recognized only the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

So why don't Jews see Christianity as one of their sects? Was it because the Jews rejected their Messiah? Wasn't the first wave of disciples, Jewish? How was Jesus able to win thousands of Jews in the shadow of the Temple, under the noses of the Pharisees and Sadducees? How was it that the largest mass conversion in the New Testament occurred with a Jewish audience, in Jerusalem, on one of their Holy Days?

Perhaps the question should be, how is it that the Messiah and His followers could worship alongside their kindred within the Temple and Synagogues where the great prophet Moses, giver of the law, was revered?

How did the Messiah treat the teachings of Moses? How is that we now see Moses and his disciples as adversaries? The law of Moses was the standard that God's people lived by for centuries, the standard God cited for His judgment when He desolated the land of Israel with the armies of pagan kings; why does our proof-text for disregarding that standard come primarily from a single, New Testament writer? Why not Isaiah or Jeremiah? Does it seem odd that the argument for a massive shift away from thousands of years of understanding comes after the fact? In the last 33% of scripture and not from the first 67% which Messiah used in His ministry?

Backwards explores these questions and shows how the answer comes through understanding scripture as a single story by a God who reveals the end in the beginning. A story where every loose end is tied up, and every promise fulfilled. Read more

Review & Description

"Although God chooses us before our birth, our path to Him is filled with uncertainty on our part. Everyone has a different story. Everyone experiences events that one way or another end up being connected through time in a divine tapestry of sovereignty."- From the Introduction

During his early years, Israel Sanchez grew up fearing God, but he didn't know much about him. He seemed to be a distant Being, someone living in a mansion in the sky. When he had to leave Cuba without either of his parents at the age of 11, God as a Father became more than a heartwarming notion, it became a reality. More than a memoir, Waters of Grace, tackles contemporary issues faced by Christians today and points readers to the reality of God.
For those love, for those who hurt, for those who ask the tough questions. Waters of Grace is for you. Read more

One year home based bible study course Vol I (Kindle Edition)

One year home based bible study course Vol I
One year home based bible study course Vol I (Kindle Edition)
By Henry Epps

Review & Description

This is part of a basic series of teachings on christian principles, that will richly enhance your life!Among, the treasures of our inheritance in Christ this is one of the richest. How many have never studied it, to love it and delight in it, and get the full blessing of it! May God, by His Holy Spirit, reveal its glory, and make us partakers of its power.
You are familiar with the blessed truth of justification by faith. In the section of the Epistle to the Romans preceding our passage (3:21-5:11) Paul had taught what its ever-blessed foundation was—the atonement of the blood of Christ; what its way and condition—faith in the free grace of a God who justifies the ungodly; and what its blessed fruits—the bestowment of the righteousness of Christ, with an immediate access into the favor of God, and the hope of glory. In our passage, he now proceeds to unfold the deeper truth of the union with Christ by faith, in which justification has its root, and which makes it possible and right for God to accept us for His sake. Paul goes back to Adam and our union with him, with all the consequences that flowed from that union, to prove how reasonable, how perfectly natural (in the higher sense of the word) it is that those who receive Christ by faith, and are so united with Him, become partakers of His righteousness and His life. It is in this argument that he specially emphasizes the contrast between the disobedience of Adam, with the condemnation and death it wrought, and the obedience of Christ, with the righteousness and life it brings. As we study the place the obedience of Christ takes in His work for our salvation, and see in it the very root of our redemption, we shall know what place to give it in our heart and life.
